Stress within your comfort zone can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. \u00a0But when stress becomes overwhelming, it can damage your health,your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.<\/p>\n<h4>When under stress the following may happen:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Blood pressure rises<\/li>\n<li>Breathing becomes more rapid<\/li>\n<li>Digestive system slows down<\/li>\n<li>Heart rate (pulse) rises<\/li>\n<li>Immune system weakens<\/li>\n<li>Muscles become tense<\/li>\n<li>Insomnia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>What causes you to stress beyond your comfort level?<\/h4>\n<p>Everyone experiences stress differently, and this depends on one\u2019s perception of it. Although nobody is really immune to it, some people certainly are able to handle it better than others \u2013 either by the nature of their personality or through a great deal of practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common external causes of stress:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Major life changes<\/li>\n<li>Work or school<\/li>\n<li>Relationship difficulties<\/li>\n<li>Financial problems<\/li>\n<li>Being too busy<\/li>\n<li>Children and family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Common internal causes of stress:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic worry<\/li>\n<li>Pessimism<\/li>\n<li>Negative self-talk<\/li>\n<li>Unrealistic expectations\/Perfectionism<\/li>\n<li>Rigid thinking, lack of flexibility<\/li>\n<li>All-or-nothing attitude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>10 Relaxation Techniques to Reduce Stress<\/h4>\n<p>Stress management involves changing the stressful situation when you can, changing your reaction when you can\u2019t, taking care of yourself, and making time for rest and relaxation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Shout out loud.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As long as you don\u2019t do it out of sheer anger, swearing can increase an overall sense of calmness and control. The simple act of exercising your vocal chords has been shown to reduce stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Blow up a balloon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a great way to force yourself to inhale and exhale slowly. It makes\u00a0you use your diaphragm and engages your\u00a0parasympathetic nervous system to naturally breathe out those feelings of\u00a0anxiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Try spending about 3 to 5 minutes slowly rubbing the inner areas of your ear and moving to the outer cartilage areas. Repeat on the other ear for a total of about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Get a colouring book for grown ups. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colouring books are the big new stress-reducing trend everyone has been talking about. The enjoyment of seeing different\u00a0colors, the artistic nature of it all or the mindless activity associated with coloring, all help you to wind down from the stress associated with your adult\u00a0responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Meditate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few minutes of meditation per day can help ease anxiety. Research suggests that daily meditation may alter the brain\u2019s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.
